ATS Resume Checklist 2026: 15 Fixes To Make Before You Apply

You are qualified. You meet every requirement in the job ad. And yet you hear nothing back — no interview, not even a rejection. The most likely reason is brutal and invisible: a piece of software called an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) filtered your resume out before any human opened it.

Around 75% of resumes are rejected this way, and roughly 70% of those rejections are caused by formatting issues that are completely fixable. This checklist walks you through 15 specific fixes, grouped into four areas. Work through them before your next application and you will instantly be ahead of the majority of candidates who never optimise at all.

Why ATS Optimisation Decides Your Fate

An ATS does three things with your resume: it parses the file into plain text, it scans that text for keywords from the job description, and it scores and ranks you. Only the top-scoring resumes reach a recruiter. If your formatting confuses the parser or your wording does not match the job, you are filtered out — no matter how strong your actual experience is.

Section 1: Formatting Fixes (1–5)

• 1. Use a single-column layout. Two-column designs often get parsed out of order or merged into gibberish.
• 2. Remove all graphics, icons, photos, charts, and skill bars. ATS cannot read them and they can corrupt the parse.
• 3. Move your contact details into the body of the document, never into the header or footer where parsers skip them.
• 4. Use a standard font (Arial, Calibri, Lato, Times New Roman). Avoid decorative or display fonts in the body text.
• 5. Avoid tables and text boxes for important information. Lay content out as plain headings, paragraphs, and bullet points.

Section 2: Keyword Fixes (6–9)

• 6. Mirror the exact job title from the advert somewhere in your summary or experience.
• 7. Pull 8 to 12 hard skills and tools directly from the job description and weave them naturally into your bullets — never as a stuffed list.
• 8. Spell out acronyms with their full form once: "Search Engine Optimization (SEO)" catches both search patterns.
• 9. Match the language exactly. If the ad says "project management", do not write only "handled projects" — the ATS may not connect them.

Section 3: Structure and Content Fixes (10–13)

• 10. Use conventional section headings: Summary, Work Experience, Education, Skills, Certifications.
• 11. Start every bullet with a strong action verb (Led, Built, Grew, Reduced, Launched) instead of "Responsible for".
• 12. Quantify your achievements. "Increased sales by 35%" beats "improved sales performance" with both machines and humans.
• 13. Use consistent date formatting (e.g. Jan 2024 – Mar 2026) across every entry so the parser reads your timeline correctly.

Section 4: File and Final Fixes (14–15)

• 14. Submit a text-based PDF (or .docx if requested). Never submit a scanned image or photo of your resume — it cannot be parsed at all.
• 15. Name your file professionally: Firstname-Lastname-Role.pdf, not resume-final-v3-REAL.pdf.

Even careful candidates repeat the same three mistakes. First, a generic summary stuffed with adjectives ("hardworking team player") instead of evidence. Second, missing the specific keywords from the job ad. Third, bullets that describe duties ("Responsible for handling clients") instead of outcomes ("Managed 60+ enterprise accounts, lifting renewal rate from 71% to 89%"). Rewrite every bullet to show ownership, action, and measurable business impact.
